I Cannot Open My HART On CD Program
How to I determine what version of the program I currently have installed?

This section shows you how to determine what version of the HART On CD program you currently have. This method assumes that you are not able to open the program. Follow the steps below:

  1. Single-right-click the Windows "Start" button. This is normally in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
    • If you're using Windows Vista, the button is usually a colorful round icon in the bottom-left of your screen with the Windows logo on it.
  2. When a menu appears, left-click "Explore". This will open "Windows Explorer". This program is not to be confused with "Internet Explorer" which is an entirely different program.
  3. Now, we need to locate your currently-installed copy of the HART On CD program.
    • If you know where your currently installed copy is located (you made this choice when you initially installed the program), then navigate to the folder that contains the program and then jump to step 5 below. The default installation location is
      "C:\Program Files\HART On CD".
    • If you do not know where your currently installed copy of the program is, go to step 4 (below) which will help you locate it. If step 4 does not succeed in helping you locate the file, you may consider contacting technical support for help.
  4. Now we will locate your installed copy of the HART On CD program. Follow the steps below.
    • First we will check in the default location.
    • Using the "Windows Explorer" program we just opened, in the left part of this window, find your "C" drive (sometimes labeled "Local Disk C"), and single-left-click it.
    • In the right part of this window, locate the folder called "Program Files" and double-left-click it. This will open this folder so you can view the contents.
    • In the right part of this window, locate the folder called "HART On CD" and double-left-click it. This will open this folder so you can view the contents.
      • If you got this far without any issues, you can jump to step 5.
      • If you cannot locate the "HART On CD" folder, continue following the instructions below.
    • Assuming you were not able to locate the "HART On CD" folder in the previous step, we now need to allow Windows to search your entire computer for us.
      • If you are using Vista, in the left part of this window, single-left-click on "Computer". This is normally located near the top of the list.
      • If you're any other version of Windows, in the left part of this window, single-left-click on "My Computer". This is normally located near the top of the list.
    • Now, we need to specify what we want to search for.
      • If you're using Vista, look in the top-right of this window for the word "search" with the magnifying glass next to it. Enter "hart.exe" in the box currently containing the word "search" and then press Enter on your keyboard. The search will begin.
      • If you're using Windows XP, look for the "Search Companion" box and single-left-click on the "All files and folders" link. Now, in the blank box, enter "hart.exe" and press Enter on your keyboard. The search will begin.
      • If you're using any other version of Windows, there should be a toolbar at the top of this window. On this toolbar, click on the button labeled "Search". Now, in the left side of this window in the topmost box provided, type "hart.exe" and press enter on your keyboard. The search will begin.
    • As the search progresses, if HART On CD is installed on your computer, a list of matches will appear in the right side of this window.
      • Now, when the search is complete, if there are no items listed in the right side of this window, you don't have HART On CD installed on your computer.
    • Now, we are only interested in files that are named "hart.exe" and that have a red heart icon next to them. you can ignore other items that appear in the right that don't have this name exactly or don't have this red heart next to them.
      • Please note that some computers will only display "hart" instead of "hart.exe". This is because settings on the computer are set differently. For the remainder of this "How To" document, you can assume that if refer to a file called "hart.exe", it's OK for you to substitute a file called "hart" instead, so long as the red heart icon appears next to it.
    • Now, single-right-click on the first item named "hart.exe" in the right side of this window.
    • On the menu that appears, single-left-click on "Properties".
      • If you're using Vista, on the new window that appears, click the tab at the top labeled "Details".
      • If you're using any other version of Windows, on the new window that appears, single-left-click on the tab at the top labeled "Version".
    • On this window, you will now see the version of the HART program that you have on your computer.
      • You may find that you have multiple "hart.exe" files on your computer. This can happen if you have installed one or more HART On CD updates. To determine if the file you're currently viewing is the one that is actually installed on your computer, you should look in the column labeled, "Folder" or "In Folder". If the value in this column says something like "C:\Program Files\HART On CD", than this is probably the copy of "hart.exe" this is actually installed on your computer. If this value is something like "C:\temp\HOCD140U", then this is simply the temporary file that was used to install the program and is not the copy that is "installed" on your computer. If the value you see here does not match either of these, then it is a very complicated issue to determine which copy of "hart.exe" is actually the "installed" one. If you need to determine this, you should call technical support for help.
  5. (This step—and those following—are for those who know how to navigate to the folder that contains their HART On CD program and have already navigated to this folder using Windows Explorer.) In the right side of the window, search for the file called "hart.exe" (the "exe" may not appear depending on your computer settings) with the red heart icon next to it. Now, single-right-click on "hart.exe" in the right side of this window.
  6. On the menu that appears, single-left-click on "Properties".
    • If you're using Vista, on the new window that appears, single-left-click the tab at the top labeled "Details".
    • If you're using any other version of Windows, on the new window that appears, single-left-click on the tab at the top labeled "Version".
  7. On this window, you will now see the version of the HART program that you have on your computer in the current folder.
