I have just read that Hal Huggins doesn't support the use of chlorella in detox because he says it contains mercury. Does this apply to alginate also? I am worried about this as I have been taking a lot of alginate over the past few months. I don't want to make my problems worse. I'm thinking of stopping taking it. What do others think?

There has been some controversey over the chlorella thing ...
1# It has been shown that chlorella may contain mercury especially if it is grown in unsafe environments; notice the word unsafe
2# BUT ... many people also belived that the chlorella held onto the mercury once absorbed and didnt release into the body (but I dont know if this is proven or not; I think it was just conjecture). But imo so is Hal Huggin's conjecture about not using chlorella.
Basically it comes down to alot of different experts out there with almost all of them without the ability to fully test out the specifics or how certain things behave; and thus making conjectures on how to practice.
I'm no expert just a aware consumer.
I'm sure Russ will say not to worry about algin

I've used algin and chlorella from the beginning and have had a wonderful recovery. Also, I am cautious when I hear anything that scares people away from alternative supplements because there is a disinformation war going on and the opponents of natural health have the money and resources to conduct it brilliantly. Take, for example, the recent report saying that mercury-amalgam is perfectly safe for kids: http://herballure.com/ubbthreads/sh...sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post7059 Did you know that every single U.S. Federal Debt Certificate (i.e. money) has cocaine on it? There was a law passed in the mid 90's when I was involved in the political scene that gave "officials" the "right" to arrest and convict anyone who was found in posession of money that was found to have cocaine on it, even in microscopic, barely detectable amounts. Our party fought the bill because it was well-known among researchers that all money has traces of cocaine on it making everyone a candidate for detention and conviction—which was the real purpose of the bill. Essentially, the powers-that-be want to make everyone a criminal so they can "legally" detain whoever they consider "undesirable".

I was talking about Hal Huggins, not opponents of alternative health. He says Chlorella is a big no in detox. Granted, his opinions are ultimately just that, and I'm not convinced that vegetarians can't get better, but when someone like him raises concerns about a detox product, it is reasonable to at least ask questions.

I posted this information quite a while ago, but perhaps it may be helpful to some of our newer members. Regarding the question of mercury in algin, I went directly to the source at Nature's Sunshine (who manufactures Algin) Health Sciences Department, and asked them if the Algin we use contains mercury. Here is their unedited response: Thank you for your inquiry. We follow strict guidelines for heavy metal testing, including California's Proposition 65. This legislation was created to ensure that any product sold within the state would not contain hazardous materials at harmful concentrations. It is the most restrictive law in the country. Any lot failing to pass any of the established acceptable test values will be rejected. Our Quality Assurance Department uses the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) to screen raw material for unwanted compounds. This device can detect presence of elements down to parts per million.
It probably isn’t possible to have 100% mercury free products, although some products may have undetectable levels of mercury depending on the sensitivity of the detection equipment. One good thing about the Super Omega-3 EPA and DHA is that the fish oils in Nature's Sunshine Products are highly purified using molecular distillation. This is the only process that can remove contaminants that could be present in the oils. Molecular distillation involves distillation in high vacuum. It uses low temperature to minimize damage to heat sensitive molecules that would be damaged by using purification methods that use higher temperatures. This method considerably lowers the amounts of heavy metals and other contaminants like PCBs.
Sincerely, Gina Benson NSP Scientist Health Sciences Department
I've been using this brand of Algin for years, even before there was a Proposition 65, and I've never had a bad reaction to it. Likewise, I've also used Chlorella (from Sun Chlorella) off and on, together with Algin, and never experienced any increase in mercury symptoms. Now, if Chlorella were to contain trace amounts of mercury OR if Chlorella were to loose it's bond with the mercury it is chelating, then taking Algin together with the Chlorella would, it seems, offer protection because it absorbs mercury. I hope this helps!

I was worried about using chlorella, but now i have Algin i will start using it soon. I bought a bottle of chlorella powder, it says it's grown in spring water on a south Asian island, it has cracked cell for easy digestability, it's done gently, not by machine which destroys valuable nutrients. Dawn.

Nature's Sunshine Algin isn't suitable for vegetarians and vegans, though. Those of us who are committed vegetarians won't buy products containing gelatin. To buy them is the same as to eat them - buying them supports the animal slaughter industry regardless of whether or not they are eaten. If they really cared about helping everyone, not just meat-eaters, they would switch capsule. Just my opinion.

For those who want to take straight chlorella, I recommend the brand called Sun. After some research, this is the brand I chose to use when I first went on a detox plan when my amalgams were removed. There is also chlorella in several NSP products that I now use that not only provide the benefits of chlorella but also contain many other very nutritious foods. Here there are: http://hocd.herballure.com/?MID=30289731326700741934I use the ph Green Zone daily! ph Green Zone I mix it with a scoop of whey protein and it starts every weekday for me. I can feel the difference.

One thing that concerns me about Proposition 65 is that, from the reply they sent, it says hazardous materials in "harmful concentrations". How do they determine what exactly is a "harmful amount"? From what I've read, for example, there is no "safe" amount of mercury, and it varies from person to person. I guess that the amalgam fillings are generally considered to not give off more than is considered "safe", at least here in the UK.
This isn't about the alginate, just something that occurred to me now while re-reading this thread.
