i never realised the effect magnesium was having for me until i stopped taking it about a week ago. I was taking magnesium citrate by solgar, which i thought was really good, but the stores ran out and they don't sell it here any more. So naturally I ran out, and I have noticed an increase in really disturbing symptoms like depression (everything looks grey again), anxiety, obsessive thinking and general spacyness and foggyness. I can attribute some of this to taking methionine recently for histamine issues, which I'm pretty sure has brought back mercury and heavy metal symptoms because of the sulfur content, so I've stopped taking this, and dusted off the algin and taking some of that to ease symptoms. (guess that solves the question of whether I still have mercury).
So for the past week I have had to use this crappy amino acid chelate magnesium that I have, which is meant to be the most absorbable form, but I never have had a good experience with it and am constantly suspicious that it is making me worse, more depressed etc. So i stopped taking that and bought pretty much the only other form that I can get here in Australia, which was orotate. I took my first one last night and I must say it is working fairly well. I slept pretty good last night, fell asleep easily, and today I have taken regular doses of it and have gradually gotten better as the day progresses! I know orotate probably has the lowest amount of elemental mag in it but it really seems to be doing the trick! It seems to have a much more positive mental effect than any other mag form I have tried, including the citrate which is also meant to be absorbable. Anyone else had this type of expereince with different forms of magnesium?

Heya Joey,
Yip, exact same thing for me to. I tried a "food supplement magnesium" said it is the most bio-available form, man did my symptoms flair up again, i know it was that. Im just so lost on which to try. Yesterday i bought the chelate form and lastnight i was terribly anxious and paranoid. Wanted to chase my visitors away cause i got scared of them. SO silly. I dont know what to try now. The only other form i can get is glycinate but its to expensive to experiment with and im scared i react again. I just dont know anymore.
I have numbness and tingling but on my whole foot, wonder why?

I take mag citrate 6-800mg a day and have those issues, maybe because its a mild chelator apparently, i dont know. I have a slight tingling on my toes a bit like a feather, it doesnt bother me but it could be the magnesium. I have never stopped taking it in the last year, i might leave it out for a week and see how i go.Initially i took it for sleep and constipation, also for good mood.

hey guys,
yea zinc is really good, excellent for skin, hair and nail issues. You may be taking a zinc supplement but did you kno your probably still not getting enough! I've felt so much better from taking a liquid zinc supp that is highly absorbable. I've got some topical zinc cream that you put on your face to protect from the sun, and this stuff is great! I've only started using it again but already noticing that the redness I get on my nose and eyes which flairs up now and then is largely prevented when I put the zinc on. Its skin colour too which makes it basically invisible, does look makeupy to start off which but sinks into the skin pretty quick.
As I said different magnesiums have different effects, but so far orotate is definately the bext for me, way way way better than citrate, amino acid chelate and other poor quality ones. I've ordered taurate which is meant to be good, because of the taurine in it. I still wanna try glycinate, which is meant ot be good also. I think my message is that if your depressed in any way, get some magnesium into you! And keep trying different forms until you find the right one! Also try a good zinc supp, which has actually helped mental issues for me too.

Okay,i might try the magnesium orate next, also the zinc supplemnt i'm taking might be giving me heartburn and indegestion. I thought maybe the omega3 was doing it but i gave it a rest for a da and still ahve the same issues, the only thing that i am still taking when the symptoms started is the zinc,so i may give that a rest for a few days.

Magnesium oxide stinks in my opinion, I've had very bad luck with it.
Citrate is the best way to go.
On a funny note, I used to buy magnesium citrate from solgar but it suddenly dissappeared from shelves too. Now I get it online.

I haven't experienced any side effects from it. It doesn't seem to be anywhere as a effective as magnesium citrite. I usually have to take higher doses.

Ok, that's good then. I did take some of the magnesium oxide last night. It's Nature's Sunshine and it has various vegetables in it too, but I notice it has already affected my stomach, so not sure I can use this form which is well known to cause diarreha.
