I've read that it's the casein protein in milk that may be the problem. If so, then whey products may be okay or non-cow milks that have different casein protein. There is still debate over whether it's the casein or the lactose.
There are non-dairy milks like rice, oat, soya, almond. I personally have rice milk, but there is hardly no protein in it. All rice milks, I think, have oil in them, so I make sure that there is no rapeseed oil. I don't know if rice-milk is good or bad, but I don't think anyone else does either, lol. There is debate over soya because of the toxins and aluminium in it.
I hope this helps a little.

Hi. There is some debate about toxins in soya. There are those who say soya is healthy, and those who say it is not because the way it is mass-produced doesn't allow a long enough fermentation process. Also, that in the traditional countries that use soy, they wouldn't use it in the quantities in western countries. I have a little soya - like soy based sausages a couple of times a week - but I now try to limit the amount of soy I have just to be on the safe side. They also have estrogenic properties, and mercury toxic women often have estrogen dominance already. o soy milk has toxins in it,that's the only milk we drink in my house.

Hi Dawn. I haven't tried Kallo. Where do you get it from? I used to have Plamil (I think) but it had rapeseed oil. I now have Rice Dream (usually plain, but sometimes treat myself to Vanilla. They also have Almond flavour). It has a shiny silver inside the box, but I'm not sure if it's foil. Hi demi, At the moment im using Kallo, rice drink. Yeah, too much soy suppresses the thyroid. I think a little is o.k. but not drinking it by the glassful.

Well, if you are hypothyroid, soy is better left alone - or just have a little. Also, large amounts of raw cruciferous veggies make hypothyroidism worse. Cooked cruciferous veggies are o.k. HOWEVER - if you are hyperthyroid, soy would be helpful, as would raw cruciferous veggies.

Hiya, Just getting back to the original milk question (a little late!), rice milk would be the best. I use it for everything now, it's really yummmy once you get used to it. I sometimes make it myself by mixing about 1/4 cup of rice with 3/4 cup water and whizzing it in a blender. Although buying it is much easier.
I suggest those of you who consume lots of soy products do some of your own research on soy. From the various books etc.. I have read about soy I am staying well away from soy products.
Cheers.. Karen

Dawn - Cruciferous veggies are those in the cabbage family, like broccoli. All of the veggies that stink when you cook them is the easiest answer.
Doris - the toothless old hag and loving it

Hey, that's a good one, Doris! Dawn, I looked up an official list of cruciferous veggies - just so I wouldn't miss any out. Here goes! Arugula, Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, watercress, bok choy, turnips and turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, rutabaga, Napa or Chinese cabbage, Daikon, radishes, Kohlrabi, kale That's the most extensive list I could find. Remember, it is o.k. to eat them in small amounts or cooked (but who would want to cook a radish?!) On the bright side, coconut in any form is supposed to increase thyroid activity.

coconut is good for hypothyroidism? also, rice milk won't block the excretion of mercury from your body?

Dallas, i wont give up brocolli, i eat it most days, we need calcium foods for our bones with thyroid problems, i dont eat dairy so i have to do something. I take thyroxine, i have read as soon as you start taking it, your bone density is affected so you must compensate.

Hi Dawn. Do you eat lentils? They are a good source of protein and not "too" high in carbs i.e. typical values would be 25g protein 45g carbs. I love Organic Lentil and Parsley Soup from Tesco. I don't know if Parsley moves mercury, but it's currently my no.1. soup. It's not cheap at £1.89 a carton, but you get 2 servings out of it and it's in a plastic container. There's no dairy in it, although I think there may be a little onion (not sure). But it has 14g of protein per serving, so is a good amount for lunch and easy to eat. Only takes a few minutes to heat and as it's organic, you know there's no nasties in it (although obviously is pre-packaged food).
I also cook my own lentils and have them with organic oven fries (which I also get from Tesco) and whatever else I'm having i.e. bean-burger or salad.
I also eat a little broccoli and sprouts as they have good protein.
I love pistachio nuts, but they are hard on my teeth
