What form of Chlorella is best? Is it necessary to get the kind with broken cell walls?

Yaeyama chlorella is the best, and I think it is important to have a kind with broken cell walls. I'm including links to Dr. Mercola's website, because he has some in-depth write-ups of chlorella that I found to be extremely helpful when I was researching which brand to buy.

Just a warning though, as much as I value the info, he is definitely a business man and he always promotes only his brand, claiming that all other brands are inferior. And there really are a lot of inferior brands, but as long as you do the research, you can find the same exact product that he sells, only from a different company and cheaper. A lot of companies get their chlorella (and various other supplements) from the same source, but then they put their own brand name on it and claim that it is unique and superior - this is what Mercola does. For instance, it appears as though there is one main company that grows the yaeyama chlorella in Japan, and that is the source for anyone claiming to have yaeyama chlorella. Their products are good, and I did break down and buy their chlorella, but I just wanted to give you a heads up about their marketing BS in case you want to compare and find it cheaper elsewhere. Just make sure whatever brand you go with is yaeyama chlorella.

Hey, Tia, where do you live? I live in Mass. The reason I ask is that you used the expression "wicked expensive". I used to live in Canada and the first time I heard the term "wicked expensive" or "wicked cute" or "wicked" whatever, was when we moved down here.

Dallas, i come from the UK, the term wicked has been used here for years , as long as i can remember.

It's funny that you ask, because it is something that me and my fiance both use. And last week, someone asked him if he was from New England, because that is where that phrase is used. We're actually from southwestern NY state....maybe we picked the phrase up from some New England friends??

What brand did you end up going with, and where do you order it from?

I ended up actually going with Vibrant Health XP Chlorella from mercola.com. My doctor told me to go by his recommendations for how the dosage, and I was limited on time, so I caved and just bought his brand because I wouldn't have to calculate any differences in dosage or anything that way. But there are definitely comparable brands. If you read the standards they use (click on the links above), do a search for yaeyama chlorella elsewhere, and compare the two, you might find some for cheaper. But if you don't want to go through the hassle, mercola.com does have a high-quality one. And in capsule form, it's not much more than other brands. If you are gutsy enough to go with the powdered form, you can save a lot of money (but it does taste algae-like).

Thanks. I've been using NOW brand Chlorella capsules which are the least expensive ones with broken cell Chlorella at my local health food store, but it's not Yaeyama Chlorella. I just picked up some Jarrow Formulas "Green Defense" on sale which has 500 mg. of the Yaeyama form.

From reading web info on chlorella, it seems to me that there for mercury detox one would want chlorella which [color:"blue"]does not[/color] absorb well in intestina but merely picks mercury and gets out as quickly as possible.

I think that vegeterians and traditional far east users, who wished to absorb the full nutrition of chlorella would want the broken wall variant. But detox users would want the kind that absorbs by intestina as poorly as possible. Who wants chorella to pick the mercury from the gut, then get absorbed by intestina, taken into liver and beyond for its nutritional value to be extracted.

Of course, it may well be that the unbroken wall chlorella will have smaller absorption surface than broken wall one, to pick the mercury. But, even if it picks less of mercury and gets it out, that's still better than picking more, then being easily digested and redistributing the mercury through our organs.

I wonder whether [color:"red"]Andy Cutler[/color], who suggests not to take chlorella at all, has examined what kind of chlorella was being used when the harm occurred.

Also, does anyone know what brands contain [color:"red"]Chlorella pyrenoidosa[/color], which is a better mercury absorber than Chlorella vulgaris, with [color:"red"]unbroken cell walls [/color] ?

Is it true that chlorella binds mercury only for a few hours or is it a mistake?
