I have made an interesting discovery that i would like to share with you.
I had my fillings removed a while ago and after cilantro use i developed dizziness, coordination problems of the legs, , feelings of detachment from reality, confusion, ringing in the ears etc.
I tried various supplements but nothing really worked for me in the long term. I did a hair analysis and found out i was low in cobalt. I read somewhere that low cobalt levels in the hair show a deficiency of b12.
Interestingly some of the symptoms of b12 deficiency are:
- ringing in the ears (!) - confusion - depression -fatigue -dementia
I started to take b12 in the form of cyanocobalamin, and did a lab test to find out if i had anaemia. I did not have anaemia and after taking b12 supplements i had normal serum levels. But i didn't notice a real difference.
Then i read somewhere that mercury can block the uptake of B12 in the brain. The brain can only use B12 in the form of methylcobalamin. I was wondering if the mercury could have created a b12 deficiency in my brain and CNS and that was the reason why i felt so bad.
Still skeptical, i ordered sublingual methycobalamin and took 1000 mcg under the tongue.
The effect was amazing. After 15 minutes I felt i light was being switched on in my brain. My depression was gone, my mind was clear, the fatigue was gone. The effect lasted for 10 hours. I have repeated this a few times(the second time the effect was not so intense) and it always worked.
I do not know if this will work for me in the long term, but i feel like this could be one of the main reasons why i feel so bad.
It seems like the mercury is blocking the production or the uptake of b12 in the brain and this creates mental symptoms.
I read doctors have used methylcobalamin to cure mercury poisoned people in sweden and other are using it to reduce symptoms of autism.
Others claim that b12 can methylate mercury making it more toxic. Cutler says this is a myth, others say it is true but this is not enough to cause problems. I heard people having bad experiences with hydroxicobalamin and cyanocobalamin but did not find any reports about methylcobalamin.
It seems to be quite safe but i feel one should increase the dose slowly.
I read that many people are doing better and have increased mental clarity when taking methylcobalamin. I also found 2 cases where mental problems went away permanently after 1 single dose of b12.
I dont think this is a miracle cure for most people and i have to see how this will work long term but i hope i have finally found a supplement that can reduce my symptoms.
Its cheap and works almost immediatly.

Nice detective work I love reading success stories.
I hear that a B12 injection is best, but if your doc is reading normal serum levels, I don't suppose he/she will see a need to do that. Apparently the nasal spray is good too, better absorption than the sublingual.

I tried it too LOL. Not deficient. But this is the wonderful thing about vitamins: you can try and see, and it isn't going to hurt you. Not like the risks you take with pharmaceuticals.

I found eliminating processed food, dairy, bread and wheat can help a LOT if you stick to it. Most people underestimate this. Especially monosodium glutamate is very bad and can cause various mental symptoms even 48 hours after consumption. Its not only the mercury that is poisoning you.

I thought elevated homocystiene was the result of low folate? And high MMA was a result of low B12... could be wrong though...

The doctor that I was seeing last year (who incidentally triggered my mercury toxicity diagnosis) kept ranting and raving about Methylcobalamin. The last thing she said to me after 4 consultations was ' You obviously like researching. If I were you I would take a very close look at Methylcobalamin - it is the future of Mercury detoxification'.
Well, I personally thought she was a bit of a nutter at the time. She was dedicated to the mercury / autism debate and when I called to make another appointment it appeared that she had been forced out of the clinic. I have no idea where she has gone and for what reason but maybe I should do a little more research upon the effects of Methylcobalamin as she had suggested.
Cheers from Rachie

Russ, What's your opinion on whether we need B12 injections because absorption from supplements is only one percent? What about the absorbtion of other B vitamins from supplements?

Well i just tried this today; http://www.foryourhealth.co.uk/store.asp?pid=66&catID=10few hours ago. Pleasant raspberry flavour. Was quite worried about reaction but so far nothing out of the 'usual' dizzy, exhausted, confused and procrastinating status lol. Cant really get a true pic of whats going on yet as the expedition to get the damn stuff involved going thru the industrial wasteland [at rush hour] where the mail depot is located. things would be a lot easier if i could actually get up and answer the door when the postie comes but nm. Dont feel a seizure particularly imminent but, guess ill find out later. Weird thing is, i have no appetite. That or i cant be bothered making anything Virago

No but the feeling of 'craziness' and detachment from reality in my mind is gone with regular b12 use. Episodes of depression are less severe but still do happen.
