The telescopes of the future: toxic nightmare

http://www.universetoday.com/2008/02/27/nano-engineered-liquid-mirror-telescopes/I read this site regularly for the latest news in astronomy. I love reading about new discoveries and speculations about things like the structure of the universe and quantum physics. However I was utterly horrified to read this article. Liquid mirrors made of mercury already exist and they want to build more. Obviously no one has thought about the people who would have to work near them, or the potential hazard to the environment. Comments welcome.

The article seems to se saying that liquid mirror telescopes could be made of other kinds of liquids too, especially on the moon, as mercury would freeze there. I just can't believe that the ones made from mercury are legal. I mean, would they build a telescope using lead? Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive substance on earth and these people seem to think it's no big deal for huge vats of it to be sitting around. A little amalgam would be a drop in the ocean.
A thorough medical exam of the people who build and use these telescopes would be revealing, I think. Let's hope none of the vats gets tipped over, cracked, etc.

nothing surprises me anymore , soon they will be putting mercury in our cornflakes and calling it something snappy so people won't be afraid to eat it . this is a likely possibily,it might be alreadly happaning... I can see it now, some strong looking cartoon superhero, with a catchy song...to lure the children of all ages... and kids everywhere having great fun chasing the silver beads around the bowl with their spoons.... "...mer-cur-ee...so tas-tee..."

this is a likely possibility,it might be alreadly happaning... I can see it now, some strong looking cartoon superhero, with a catchy song...to lure the children of all ages... and kids everywhere having great fun chasing the silver beads around the bowl with their spoons.... "...mer-cur-ee...so tas-tee..." LOL. Now that's funny! I mean in a perverse kind of way. It's just about as insane as mercury fillings to begin with as, think about it, we are ingesting that stuff all day long once they are in. Are we really much different than the sheep and monkeys? Why was that not enough to stop the madness? OK, so let's expand on your theme. Give the superhero a BIG "M" for "mercury" on his shirt, have heavy metal music in the background, and have him say something manly and manic like, "Eat your mercury, kids, it's GREAAAAT! It will give you gingivitis, rashes, depression, irritability, insomnia, insanity, headaches, thyroid and adrenal problems, frequent urination and so much more!" The product can be named Toxi-Toasties, and the announcer can say at the end, "Eating Toxi-toasties may cause serious side effects like your face turning blue, and your head falling off. So check with your doctor to see if ToxiToasties are right for you." Make it a little dweeby kid with black glasses with one lens broken and tape on the other. He's got a t-shirt on that says, "Sugar...ummm, ummm, good." Have his slovenly mother push him out the door saying, "I'll be at the school at 4 to take you for your flu shot." You get the picture? TW

It's a bird, it's a plane....... NO, IT"S MERCURY MAN!
Mercury Man - or just call him M-Man! Sometimes known as Quick Silver. Faster than a speeding bullet! No - he takes a long time to do his dirty work. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound - no, he just slowly flows around them.
Mercury Man is delusional - he sounds like a superhero, but he is really just another middle aged, balding, big bellied, bruiser who got a load of fillings in his teens. Now he spends his days trying to figure out how to save the world, and how to become more popular than Batman and the other superheroes. He does side gigs promoting tasty products like Toxi-Toasties, and guest appearances at Big Time Wrestling events.
Now, if we can just get this run as a commercial on TV, or on SNL, we might make raise awareness.
I agree sunflower, small print and chinese at the bottom - you need a magnifying glass to read it....
