This is also a big problem for me. I tried many supps and found that if you are really depressed the natural things like st. johns wort, 5-htp etc. won't help much. The supplements that work best for me are magnesium (megadoses), fish oil and the essential trace elements. It helps but my life still sucks, so it is not a cure for depression All lot of my depression is caused by food allergies. If you get severly depressed after eating you should take hydrochloric acid and pancreatic enzymes and/or avoid food allergens. An other thing that has been helpful(even more effective than the supps) is listing to a meditation CD ( www.centerpointe.com) I could not believe it but this really helps a lot.

my depression is caused by hormone imbalance, meditation could never have helped me,i felt so negative and dead inside. i have feelings now, still having ups and downs but as far as depression goes more good days than bad. i have estrogen dominance too so that doesnt help, so i balance it with progesterone, it calms me and helps sleep better.

Hi Tracy, I have this but after weeks on the good diet, I had a wee bit more control. One slip off the diet, even mild, can throw me into severe depression and other symptoms and unable to do anything. Unmovitated, exhausted, tearful etc. Plus the body has got to try and get back on track again after any cheat, so you go through that also. So if you're off the wagon as far as diet is, that can be another biggie.
I've just discovered iodine Tracy. Mercury apparently blocks the action of iodine and can cause low thyroid function, as well as what mercury does to adrenals... So it's is a very good idea to make sure you get enough of the elements that mercury inteferes with. Iodine has helped warm me up a bit more. You can get this from kelp, or you can get lugol's iodine and take a couple of drops a day. NO need to overdo it, but I think it is necessary. I also believe that having more iodine has been encouraging more detox and once again I can feel and taste metals trying to come out. It can give more energy and if depression is related to thyroid, it can help a bit with that as well, though I cannot go off my diet at all, no matter what I'm taking. These things become of little use if I slip off the wagon.
I find that a good quality multi/vitamin/mineral powder, plus extras like selenium, zinc, magnesium, iodine, vitamin E, milk thistle etc can be of help. Plus extra fish oil (mercury free).
Be careful of caffeine too, it puts strain on the adrenal glands.
All these things add up and have an effect. I believe sugar, wheat/gluten, or anything high carb can cause massive problems in people like us and should be completely avoided at all costs. The improvements from giving these things up can of course take weeks to achieve, but it is worth it and it is worth sustaining for that reason. It's not easy to stick to, but the alternative is far worse. I'd rather have a restricted, but healthy diet, than eat bits of this and bits of that because I "feel like it", and then suffer the long term ongoing consequences.
Take care Tracy, I hope you find relief from this.

hi tracy : been suffering from depression lately ,not severe ,but if I would have let it go it would have become severe again , I found my testosterone levels were slowly dropping again , after months of herbal suppliments that help raise them , my bodys tolerance of them slowly increased , so now I am on testosterone gel as of last week ,which has helped greatly , have you had your estrogen levels onlong with other hormones checked ? if not you may want to have them checked , supplimention can make you feel much better , only use antidepresants as a last resort , sometimes they can make things much worse .

Hi Tracy, I get depressed too, sometimes, but luckily it never is severe or long lasting. Some things I find useful are ,the usual simple things like, writing down how I feel, even if it's just numbness, talking about things with someone,I even sometimes call a helpline just to talk and not be judged. Diet - raw foods are incredible for lifting depression, salad leaves ,carrots, peppers, celery, pumpkin seeds. I use natural progesterone cream too. Daylight, even sitting at a sunny window for half an hour might help. Hope you feel better
