Dental Mercury Use Banned in Norway, Sweden and Denmark Because Composites Are
Adequate Replacements

OSLO, Norway, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Norway recently announced a ban
on the use of mercury, including dental amalgam, that took effect on January
1, 2008. Sweden announced a similar ban and dentists in Denmark will no
longer be allowed to use mercury in fillings after April 1, 2008.

It really annoys me that Uk hasnt banned it yet, i have bloody nightmares about it, are we that backward, how screwed up is our dental association, or dont they give a !<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dancefiction.gif" alt="" />

i hope it spreads like wildfire , but the united states will be the last holdout , we still haven't gone to the metric system yet like the rest of the world

The ban on mercury in medical practice is being phased out in Europe,(thermometres,barometers etc...)I was searching the european parliament website recently.They plan to have it phased out by 2010.
I feel confident (sounding like a politition)that the ban of dental amalgam will follow suit.They will just use up what they have left and then it will no longer be used...(little consolation to us already poisoned)
The fact they are acknowledging it's harmful in the first place is a good start.
I saw dvd of Doctors environmental association ,they did a study of hair mercury levels from people all across Europe,
the Spanish/people living in Spain had almost doubly high levels...that reminded me of something else I read on Eur.Parliament website.
There are mercury mines in Spain.
Excuse my ignorance if you knew this already.
They have only stopped using them,within the last 5/10 years...I can't remember exactly.Maybe they are still using them?
(I need to check my notes for exact info.)

There will never be an admissision of wrongdoing by the dental assosiations; but I predict at some point the use of amalgam will be phased out completely.

I do not believe that dentists actually know they are causing people any harm,but it does NOT inspire confidence in their
intelligence/commen sense/competence of them as health care practitioners,if they have not figured it out for themselves.
(I wonder how many of them who use amalgam ,have a doubt somewhere in their minds but continue anyway)

I'm thrilled to hear this news about Denmark. It adds yet more credibility to the truth about amalgams.

I also recently heard that 52% of dentists in the U.S. no longer use amalgams. I don't know if it's true, but I would love to get a source for this.

Interesting Link Virago. Some of the comments by dentists are pretty interesting.


But I have a question. Two quotes:

"composite is not inert, it releases formaldehyde"

and

"amalgam does not release estrogen as a byproduct"

Has any one heard of composties containg formaldehyde or estrogen? Regardless I'm sure the are still a hell of a lot better than mercury.

On statistic I read(I don't remember the source) is that less than 30% of dental restorations performed in the US last year used amalgams. So even many the dentists who still use amalgams try to use other substances when the patient is willing to go for it.

As for as amalgams being unnecessary, my dentist said that once every month or two he still uses amalgam, as composite fillings are not suitable for a large cavity in a molar, or perhaps a bicuspid. The choice would then be an inlay or onlay, or a crown. Some people who don't have dental insurance aren't willing to pay the much higher cost for an inlay or onlay, and choose an amalgam instead. Some dentists might place a composite filling where it is not appropriate(ie. a large cavity in a rear tooth). This might not last so long, or might be quite likely to allow decay to form under the filling.
