hi there all

ive had so many types of composites in my mouth and im allergic to all of them. My tohngue is huge and thick and im having trouble breathing. I have hives too. I basically think im allergic to composites. Which leaves me with glass ionomers....are these any good?

This is a difficult situation. It does sound like it could well be an allergic response... You may want to look at ceramic porcelain, as this stuff is also stronger and harder and does not tend to leach out its components, it is not a plastic either.

You will of course need to consider the bonding/lining agents. It's unfortunate that you are experiencing such reactions, because I'd suggest getting samples and testing them in your own mouth before replacement. But given the fact you are already reacting, you won't know the difference.

Gold is another option, but you'd need to get a pure source.

Glass ionomers could be another option and cheaper obviously. Is there anyway you can test these materials to find out if there is an allergy? Can you find someone who does testing and tell them about the reactions you are already experiencing and see what comes up when they test you with plastics?

I would get in touch with a biologic dentist perhaps about this and ask them what they can do in case of plastic allergy.

Glass ionomer is ok when you are allergic to the plastics, I have several.

hard to find a dentist who uses the stuff anymore though. so i have been pulling my amalgam filled molars slowly one by one instedad... yick but they are messed up anyway. I am 48 years old I got many years good use out of them c'est la vie.

feel sorry for ya. You better find a dentist to get that stuff out asap. been there myself, it's not fun.

take some OTC anti-histamines asap, not the best for you but it will calm the allergies down a bit till you can get the plastics out of there.

apples and mushrooms are good to eat to help settle the allergies down too, but defintely get some anti-histamines. I normally would not tell anyone to take OTC meds but I don't what else to tell you in that regard due to the hives etc, you better get some help quick.

I have a list of glass ionomers from my serum test list. There is quite a bit here too. Let me know if you need to know anything (e.g. names), because I'm happy to give you a list and some are bonding agents as well.

You need to get tested for what you can and can’t handle in your gob.

I know two places to get the tests done fairly cheaply. Both in London. One was £40, other was a bit more. Money well spent if you ask me. That’s testing via Applied Kinesiology(AK).

I don’t know about serum testing but I remember someone saying cost £1000….but I never investigated that myself in detail.

If you can’t afford the serum testing then AK is well worth the money. I have the money to do serum and/or AK and I chose not to bother with serum testing because I’m a firm believer in AK, but every is different.

BIOLAB in London does biocompatibility tests through a blood sample, for a reasonable price of about £50 (at least when I had one done). I think it is a good idea to have the test done, especially if you have multiple sensitivities. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to have a test done for my last round of filling replacements as my dentist had changed material (no longer uses diamondlite but glacier) so am just hoping for the best.
