Thank you Bex for posting this. This issue has been on my mind a lot lately. I did a search and couldn't find a retailer in Australia, but I did find a site selling LED household lights. http://www.lightenupleds.com.au/FAQ.htmlI wonder if they are OK to use? They have to better than the flourescents ones as they don't contain any mercury.

Thanks Bex, I've just ordered two of the LED lights one 'warm white' and one yellow. I'll see how they go!

Hi Bex, Well I got one LED light - warm white. I have also ordered yellow but its not in stock so its on back order. It's OK, I dont mind the 'look' of it, it does actually have a warmish glow , which you wouldn't expect for LED, but unfortunately it's not very bright. It would be perfect for a lamp. I got Model No. G6030 which is $9.90
They do have brighter lights but they are a little more expensive - still I think it will be worth and will probably phase them in. They supposedly last 10 years so although expensive initially it is worth it. The old style incandescent bulbs seem to blow within 2 weeks in this house so we have been forced to use the flourecents ones which I'm not at all comfortable with. In fact the flourecent bulb cracked when we were changing it.
Here in Australia they are right now replacing incandescent lights with fluorescent for free in households. A friend of mine got hers replaced last week. Of course no-one warned her about the risks or informed that you should not really throw these out in the trash, but instead hazardous waste. Incandescent light bulbs will be banned by 2010 supposedly to save the environment!!
I contacted the New Zealand company that you mentioned and they would be willing to ship to Australia so I will consider those as well. All in all I'm really happy to have alternatives available even if they are more expensive. Its worth it just for the peace of mind!!
