On April 26th, The Denver Post printed an editorial on SB 87. This has to be, by far, one of the worst I've ever seen on this issue. The mainstream media in Colorado, with the exception of Channel 7 and American Freedom Network, has perpetuated the lie that CO is last vaccinating toddlers for almost 2 years. This lie is being used to make the public believe that we need to expand and fund the CO immunization tracking system to fix this so-called crisis. Below is what I've written in response to the Post editorial.

*******************************
The Post editors should go join Julie Gerberdingdong and the rest of the "we can't get the numbers straight" and "the sky is falling" federal health officials out in Washington, DC. The citizens of Colorado are capable of critical thinking, something the Post editors seem to be lacking. In their editorial on Tuesday, April 26th, 2005, Owens Should O.K. Immunization Bill, the Post editors showed not only their bias on the issue, but their ignorance.

Myth: Colorado had the lowest childhood immunization rate among the 50 states in 2004.

Truth: Estimates are only available through the 2nd ¼ of June. Alaska, Kansas, Nevada, New Jersey, Washington and Wyoming are all lower than CO in the 4:3:1:3:3:1 category for children by 24 months.
http://www2a.cdc.gov/nip/coverage/n...4mo_iap_0304&qtr=Q3/2003-Q2/2004

If you look at that same category by age 35 months, there are 11 states lower than CO.
http://www2a.cdc.gov/nip/coverage/n...n_state_0304&qtr=Q3/2003-Q2/2004

Myth: Only about 63 percent of our children are inoculated against such contagious diseases as whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis and meningitis.

Truth: First, they are not "our" children. They belong to their parents, not the state or the Post editors. According to the 2nd ¼ 2004 estimates for children 19-35 months of age; 93.5% got 3 DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis or whooping cough), 76.6% got the 4th DTP, 88.1% got MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), 88.0% got polio, 87.1% got hepatitis b and 55.1% got 3 pneumococcal vaccine.

The 4th DTP can be given to children in CO up to the age of 48 months, while federal recommendations are for the 4th DTP to be given by 24 months. Colorado will always lag in this category as long as the state and federal schedules do not match. The pneumococcal vaccine, which is the lowest category, has been indefinitely suspended in Colorado because of cost. The 4th DTP was suspended because of shortages until Sept. 04. http://www.cispimmunize.org/IZSchedule.pdf Federal ACIP schedule http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/dc/Immunization/Forms/CARD-certofimm.pdf state schedule

Myth: Senate Bill 87, sponsored by Sen. Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, and Rep. John Witwer, R-Jefferson County, is sorely needed.

Truth: What is sorely needed is funding to purchase vaccines, not an immunization tracking system that will violate privacy, be expensive and not increase rates when there are shortages or the state can't afford to buy the vaccines.

Myth: When parents are informed that their children are due or overdue for an immunization, they will also be notified "of the option to refuse an immunization on the grounds of medical, religious or personal belief considerations."

Truth: Current law requires schools, clinics and practitioners to inform parents of their rights to exemptions. There are no penalties in the current law for not informing parents of their rights; therefore it does not happen most of the time. SB 87 does not provide for any penalties for not informing people of their rights.

Myth: Witwer, a physician, said that notification of routine immunizations would be voluntary for parents who want such notification and who have allowed their children's information to be included in a state-run database that tracks child immunizations since 1996.

Truth: The word voluntary does not appear anywhere in the tracking system law. On the contrary, information can be gathered from; birth certificates, physicians, health care practitioners, clinics, schools, parents, students, managed care organizations, health insurers, hospitals and persons or entities that have contracted with the state without consent. The tracking system is not voluntary and parents are not given the option to allow it or not. After information is gathered, the so-called "opt-out" does not remove your name and birth date.

Myth: Parental notification would only be required in the case of an epidemic - and even then, actual immunizations would still be optional.

Truth: No one really knows what would happen in CO in the case of an epidemic because the bio-terrorism plan, including how CO would handle vaccinations and quarantine, has not been released to the public. SB 87 says the department's contractor "may directly contact the parent". Allowing direct contact will let it happen. It doesn't have to be required.

Myth: The proposed law strikes a balance between the unquestioned benefits of immunizations and the religious or other objections some Colorado parents may have about the practice.

Truth: While the Post editors say there are "unquestioned benefits" of immunizations, there are people in Colorado who question the benefit of vaccinating newborns and children with hepatitis b when they are not at risk, vaccinating healthy children with flu vaccine that doesn't work and still contains mercury and vaccinating toddlers with chickenpox vaccine that will wear off and put them at greater risk for complications later in life, among others.

Myth: But while taking a vaccine may pose a 1-in-a-million risk of serious illness or death for a child, contracting the disease itself may pose a 1-in-10 chance of death or crippling injury.

Truth: According to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) data there were 3,188 life threatening adverse reactions to vaccines and 2,538 deaths since 1990. It is estimated that only 10% of adverse events are ever reported to VAERS.http://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/index.html Post editors should provide their reference for diseases we vaccinate children for that carry a 1- in - 10 chance of death or crippling injury.

Information compiled by Cindy Loveland, mrssnappy@aol.com , Colorado citizen sick and tired of the print media in Colorado not telling people the truth.

Editorials alone express The Denver Post's opinion.
