Submission and Humility

BIBLE MEDITATION: -

1 Peter 5:5 - "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

To be "clothed" in 1 Peter 5:5 means to tie a knot or put on a servant's apron. Basically this verse tells us to tie on the apron of a slave and be humble.

Why do you think Peter used that figure of speech? I think it was because Jesus laid aside His garments, girded Himself with a towel, and washed their feet. Peter would never forget that moment. The Scripture records, "Peter saith unto Him, 'Thou shalt never wash my feet.' Jesus answered him, 'If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me,' " (John 13:8).

ACTION POINT:

There are two lessons here: 1. We must be clothed in humility. You can't look down on somebody when you're washing their feet. 2. Even though we are saved, we walk in a dirty world. We need to come to Jesus daily to cleanse us from our sins, restore and refresh us.

--PASTOR GEORGE--a dear, humble, man of God--came to Okinawa as a retired minister of a huge church in California. We became friends, and through his ministry, the church grew. While truck-loads of Marines wearing combat boots, camouflaged pants and white T-shirts filled the front rows of the church, Pastor George shared his love of Jesus and the Gospel. Everyone left knowing he'd been in the Lord's presence.

As a young missionary, I wondered how this man could radiate our Savior so well. He shared how over many years of ministry he tried to find God in even more personal ways. He pleaded for spiritual gifts, dropped to the floor prostrate in prayer, sat in silence, memorized scripture...but it wasn't until he focused on Jesus in the Gospels, meditation on the stories of God's Son that he felt the satisfaction of the Bread of Life and brightness of the Light of the World.

As the song by Bill Gaither says, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! There's something about that Name!"
It's Jesus' name that fills us to overflowing.

Someone asked an army officer, "Why are you a Christian?" He said, "One day we went out on a march. We slugged through the mud all day long. Our boots were dirty, and our clothes were heavy. When we came into the barracks, we were cross and irritable."

"There was a young man who had already come in, cleaned up, and was kneeling down by his bed saying his prayers. I became so irritated I took one of my muddy boots and hit him in the head with it." He said, "The young man paused for a moment and then continued praying. But when I awoke the next morning, my boots were beautifully polished and set by my bed by that young man. That's what brought me to Christ."

--ACTION POINT:
--You know, it is when God's people suffer as Christians that this world begins to look at us. Now we may not want it. We may not ask for it. Certainly I'm not asking for it. But if it comes, let us suffer as Christians, as the Bible says. Oh dear friend, from the human viewpoint it is misery. From the Satanic viewpoint it is mystery.
