One of my favorites . . .

This brief insight by F. Harold Wirth, a highly respected dentist from New Orleans, has always resonated with me:

The Mouth

The mouth in its entirety is an important and even wondrous part of our anatomy, our emotion, our life; it is the site of our very being.

When an animal loses its teeth, it cannot survive unless it is domesticated; its very existence is terminated; it dies.

In the human, the mouth is the means of speaking, of expressing love, happiness and joy, anger, ill temper, or sorrow.

It is the primary sex contact; hence it is of initial import to our regeneration and survival by food and propagation.

It deserves the greatest care it can receive at any sacrifice.

We have to admit, as much as we take it for granted, it is pretty hard to not take notice of our own as well as others!

Bay Area Endodontics professionals use:

- a microscope and fiberoptic light to see into the canal

- MTAD cleanser (non-bleach antibiotic cleaner that cleanses the miles of microscopic tubules) (www.BioPureMTAD.com)

- endodontic irrigator

- endodontic vacuum to pull debris and bacteria out, rather than stuffing it down into the canal

- pellets of ozone instead of eugenol (a toxic substance)

- a special root canal sealer,

AH Plus, after the gutta percha step.  This is a resin paste used for permanent sealing.

Hi Russ,

Many are surprised to learn that each separate tooth is an individual living organ.  This fact becomes very apparent when one experiences the unique and excruciating pain that only a toothache can give.  When it does grab one, it can shake one to his inner core!

Yes, teeth, all 32 of them, are separate organs, not insignificant bony chicklets sticking out of one's gums.

They function separately and together in a fashion that can last one a lifetime.

These organs form a true joint with the bone they are embedded in.  The joint is complete with a ligament, just as any other two bones coming together.  The joint allows the movement and slight rotation of each in its socket.

Yes, teeth do move, rotate, shift.  They are controlled by the opposing teeth, as well as the tongue, lips, cheeks, as well as swallowing and speech patterns.

Best Regards,

Dr. Behm

____________

Dramatic magnification of a tooth

This fascinating video, Zooming into a Tooth http://www.flixxy.com/tooth-magnification.htm  shows a graphic depiction of unparalleled magnification of what I am hoping will turn you on regarding the wonder of teeth.

This video was put together using different instruments. Light microscopes are limited to magnifications of 2,000 times, electron microscopes up to 2 million times.

Definition of Apatite:  a common calcium phosphate mineral occurring in crystals and masses, or in fine-grained masses as the chief constituent of bones and teeth and of phosphate rock, formerly used in manufacture of phosphate

fertilizers.  [From Greek apate, deceit (from its often being mistaken for other minerals).]

These organs contain a complete blood, nerve, lymphatic supply throughout its dentinal tubules.  Here is a picture of the inside of a cracked tooth, showing the tubules both cross section and lengthwise.  You can see how porous a tooth is!

The living character of teeth make them rather resistant to assaults, but they are not impervious to injury.  Trauma can occur either in the form of infection or a blow to the area.  The teeth sometimes cannot recover.

The body has an ability to repair itself, but this is dependent on proper nutritional supply and nerve/blood communication to the injury.

Cracked Teeth

A few things can cause teeth to crack, the primary one being the opposing tooth.  If the bite is not correct, and the teeth do not mesh properly, continued chewing and/or grinding can weaken a tooth, and cause it to crack.

The teeth contact each time one swallows, which occurs 2,000 times a day.  This will also contribute to a crack in a tooth.

Mercury, by nature, contracts and expands with heat/cold (thus its use in thermometers).  Therefore, metal fillings are continuously contracting and expanding when one drinks hot tea or eats ice cream.  This makes a tooth more likely to crack at some point.

This is also why we normally find decay under an old mercury filling.  A space develops between the filling and the tooth, bacteria seeps under the filling and causes destruction.

Below is a photo of a fellow who came to us last week with a cracked molar.  We removed the mercury filling, which clearly shows the crack.  It's arc shaped, from the left to the bottom.

Luckily, we were able to fix it with a crown, thus saving the tooth.  Utilizing sophisticated new dental materials, we could "weld" the crack together internally, then cover it with a protective crown.  This will prevent any future pain and weakness in this tooth due to the crack.

Sometimes we're not as lucky, and the tooth has to either be extracted or root canaled with ozone.

This crack was caused because David's opposing tooth did not mesh properly with this one, and each time he bit or swallowed, it weakened this tooth a little more, till finally it created the present picture.  David had come to us for routine mercury removal, he had no symptoms with this cracked tooth.

Next issue we will show the condition that is not reversible:  a split tooth or a crack that has gone too deep, where the person experiences pain or uncomfortable sensations.

Root Canal with Ozone Therapy - Sequence of Events

Getting ozone therapy prior to having a root canal done can help kill any bacteria/fungus/virus that are in the microscopic tubules of this dead tooth.

The steps we recommend are:

1.  Endodontist

The endodontist (root canal specialist) will do the first step.  The canals of the tooth will be cleaned and shaped, then a temporary filling will be put in the tooth.

2.  Dr. Behm

The next two steps of ozonating the tooth are done in our office.

The first appointment can be on the same day or a week or so after the endodontist.  We will remove the temporary filling, ozonate and then put another temporary filling in.  No anesthesia is needed for ozonation.

3.  Dr. Behm

Step 2 will be repeated about 10+ days later.

4.  Endodontist

Then go to the endodontist, who will finish the root canal.

5.  Dr. Behm

The final step is for us to put a metal-free core in the tooth for extra strength, and crown it.  This step will take two visits, then you're done.
