I found this. "Alpha lipoic acid should not be used alone, as it only mobilizes mercury with a weak bond. Without additional chelators present, such as DMPS or DMSA, the mercury may just redistribute elsewhere in the body instead of being removed." http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T76343.htmlWhile some might want to debate this, I will say that when I took ALA alone I had much greater unpleasant side effects. Taking ALA with DMSA made chelation much easier. I had increased my ALA dosage to the point where it was around 3x the DMSA dosage. Now that I have stopped chelating for many months and just restarted a few weeks ago, I am using 50 mg ALA and 62 mg DMSA. Last year I was taking around the same dosage of DMSA I am taking now, but was taking 200 mg per dose of ALA. This time I am leery of the 200 mg ALA dosage, and might not go up that high for a long while. This time I have been doing 4 day rounds while last year I did only 3 day rounds.

I spoke to Andy and he told me ALA is sufficient at detoxing alone? I was only going to do ALA due to kidney failure last year and not wisheing for a relapse? I was going to start at 10 mg every 3 hours 3-4 mths after last amalgam removal..

but in Dr. Cutler's book on amalgam illness he emphasizes that you should not use ALA until you've cleared mercury out of blood with other chelators. if you use it before blood cleared out, using ALA alone will take that metal that's in blood and possibly move it into fatty tissues ie brain etc. the other chelators like DMSA are water soluble and will not move metals into fatty tissues, but at same time will not detox it from brain etc if that's what you need........
may someone please correct me if I got this wrong......

Thats why I was told not to use the ALA for 3-4 mths. The body will naturally reduce the mercury in the blood by itself, without DMSA. It is just supposed to be quicker and more effective with DMSA. I have past kidney issues so do NOT want to use DMSA. If I wait out the 3-4 mths I will be fine too detox with ALA alone.
DMSA is optional, ALA is neccessary.

According to Cutler, ALA used in conjunction with DMSA is supposed to cure you up to 30% quicker: http://onibasu.com/archives/am/20727.htmlMy understanding is that DMSA chelates and pushes mercury out of the body through urine, while ALA pushes it out through stool. So if you have a poor bowel function, you might find it extremely difficult to chelate on ALA alone.

hi folks, just bought a 4 month supply of DMSA and it feels like I'm holding mercury itself in my hand! To take or not to take......then I pulled the following off the web..... http://www.mercurypoisoning.me/dangerous_chelators_for_mercury_removal.htmlDr. Boyd Haley, chemistry professor, says that DMSA would not work in metal chelation since it's a neurotoxin. Dr. Rashid Buttar says he had stopped using DMSA in his practice because he has not seen clinically positive results. In fact, during his clinical observations, he had observed the signs of neurotoxicity in his autistic patients who were on DMSA. He further goes on to say: "Any discriminating and judicious physician will not use DMSA if treating a child with metal toxicity, especially given the light that a developing brain is far more susceptible than a fully developed one for instance." neurotoxicity? wow....then again, Dr. C. warns: to stay on the supplements, and in support of that, the directions on the bottle say to dose up on minerals while you're taking it, which makes sense if it's chelating not only mercury lead etc. but beneficial minerals which keep the CNS functioning normally......and of course (again Dr.C.): take it nonstop every 4 hrs for months, while the bottle is saying every other day, which by doing one can see could cause free flow of merc if the DMSA lets go of it while still in blood and there won't be any more DMSA around to pick it up again til the next day.... so maybe that's the source of the neurotoxicity they're talking about.....

Have you looked at the work of Andy Cutler? www.noamalgam.com Frequent Low Dose I've been using DMSA for 5 years. I don't believe their neurotoxic proposal. Like anything, it needs to be used properly. Preferable on a frequent low dose oral protocol. Taken every 4 hours for 3 days, followed by 4 or more days off. The same for alpha lipoic acid which can be used by itself but is taken every 3 hours. You should not take dmsa non-stop for months or in high doses. That's where they probably encounter their problem. I have been away from this forum for 5 years. In that time I removed my amalgams, chelated myself and two kids. Began a safe chelation/biomed website and forum. We assist parents with chelation for their autistic children all the time with dmsa/ala or dmsa or ala on our forum. It's all about how you use it. It does not remove minerals unlike EDTA but you should take some basic antioxidant vitamins while chelating just to help you feel better. I find a lot of misinformation online about chelators but most of them seem to fail to consider pharmacokinetics. Part of the flaw I see with this website is that Clay baths do not remove metals from your brain. We have had many parents think they were chelating their kids with these baths but their hair tests never showed any improvement, and neither did the kids. In fact, some of the clay is itself contaminated with heavy metals. DMPS is ok for mercury, but you have to have a prescription. It only removes mercury and nothing else, so if you happen to also have Lead or cadmium...you need DMSA. And for some reason we find people/kids seem to have more symptoms on DMPS. Buttar's patients end up coming to my forum to do Andy Cutler chelation. the site looks weird to me, where is there anything about the author or organization that put it there? ah well... just my view of things based on my experience recovering toxic children and myself. Best of luck to you on your journey! Jan (used to be Metal Mouth Mom)
