-Walking Associated with Longevity~
-RESEARCH CORNER from VRP

-In December 2012, a new study reported that walking four times a week for 15 minutes improves longevity in elderly adults. Currently, the average life expectancy in the U.S. is 78.7 years. goingnowherefast

The subjects included 152 mobile and self-caring adults with an average age of 80 years. The investigators collected data including socio-demographic characteristics, clinical and biochemical data, diet, physical activity, smoking, depression status, cognitive status and anthropometrics measurements. The researchers followed the subjects for 10 years.

During the follow-up period, 63 percent of the subjects died. The researchers found several significant predictors of mortality, including old age, chronic diseases, smoking, depression, coffee consumption and CD4/CD8 ratio (marker of immune function). The investigators showed that overall survival was highest for subjects walking in open air four times weekly for at least 15 minutes.

More specifically, after adjusting the data for confounding factors such as sex, age, education, chronic diseases, smoking, body mass index and CD4/CD8 ratio, elderly subjects walking in open air four times weekly had a 40 percent decreased risk of mortality than individuals who walked less than four times weekly.

The study authors stated, "Findings suggest an independent and protective effect of walking on mortality and supports the encouragement of physical activity in advanced age for increasing longevity." ~~~
