I just recently joined a gym and I don't have the money for a personal trainer. I have no idea what I should be doing with these machines and what not to do. I'm 17 and I weigh around 160 pounds I'm 5'5" and I would like to lose 20-30 pounds this summer. I'm already trying to stick to the 1200 calorie a day diet, but that isn't working out as well as I thought. They have basically every machine there is at this gym for cardio and weight lifting. I want to mostly lose my stomach, butt and thighs, but I could also use some more muscle in my arms. What machines/weights should I be using, how often should I use them? I really need specifics here, I have no idea what I'm doing. Also, they have a sauna at this gym, should I use this before or after I work out? Thanks.
First you should lose some of your weight through the cardio exercises. So you should also do some cardio exercises along with the gym weight exercises for developing your muscles and shaping up your body. You should also take balanced and protein based foods to gain your muscles and avoid more junk foods.
Greetings! This is very good that you have taken this step. However, as the other poster said, you would need to do away with the junk foods, candies, and back off on the carbohydrates.
Walking or jogging is good. Why not ask someone at this gym for some 'pointers'? A treadmill is good, IF you use it. I mean at your home.
I found that if I set a book up on the bars/platter, and read, the time passes much faster. Put on some music that you'd like to keep a little beat with, as you take the steps. Don't look at the clock. The time truly goes by fast if you can read, or face your treadmill, so that you can look out a window. I highly recommend an electric one. If that's out, use the one at the gym and if the noise distracts you, use ear plugs, or a CD player with some music you like. Amazing how fast the time goes while reading or listening to some good upbeat music. Be sure to have a good pair of tennis shoes.
Maybe go online and type in 'Beginner Exercises for weight loss.' That should get you started. Watch those calories.....YOU CAN DO IT! In place of french fries enjoy the Lay's Baked Potato Chips. I love 'em! They even have baked Doritos, tostados, etc. Amazing what you'll find once you replace the fattening foods, with other things like veggies, fruit, and drink plenty of water.
Remember the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. You have the "WANT TO", so go for it!

Hi Trishamile!
I was over on youtube and found there are several different workouts for the abdomen, stomach, butt and thighs. Maybe this will help? Seems you don't really need a gymn for these.
If you have a YMCA or YWCA in your town, they usually have some good workouts that you can do with others for encouragement? The treadmill is really a winner, IF you use it, for circulation and stiff muscles.Best wishes!
