Hi! Since I'm an Englsh teacher, I'm always looking for any magazines and newspapers from North America or the U.K. They make great reading material for students. Anyway, browsing through a magazine called the New Yorker which I picked up recently in hopes to use for class, I stumbled upon an amusing advertisement which I'm sure you'll all find equally entertaining (or perhaps disturbring). Set on a vibrant yellow background, the heading reads: Concerned About Mercury? Below is a picture of a can of "Genuine Whale Meat" After that it says: You shouldn't be. Unless you eat this. (OK, so they're saying you don't need to be concerned about consuming mercury unless the seafood you're eating is whale meat). And here's the actual advertisement's statement below. Environmental scares about trace amounts of mercury in fish rely on a study of island natives who eat huge amounts of whale meat. However, scientists who study heavy fish-eaters find no health risks from mercury. So, unless you're lunching on a Moby Dick sandwich, there's no reason to worry.
Fish is good for you. Baseless anxiety (or whale blubber) isn't.
FischScam.com I haven't checked out the website yet, but I can only imagine how much of a farce it is. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, this coming from a capitalist corporatist magazine!

Wow, well immediately after posting I took a gander at this fishscam.com website and you'll be happy to know that mercury is just a myth, we're all safe and sound. That is, according to them. Perhaps the most shocking portion of their website is the heading which reads Mercury Myths. Have a look yourself. I'd be curious if anyone actually thinks what they're saying sounds in any way plausible (I sure don't think so!)

I know us americans are used to the 'capitalist corporatist magazines'. And the add really doesnt surprise me.
It has only been recently that the smoking ads started to give some real truth to them ie warning people of some dangers.
At least it's not a add about mercury fillings or vaccines.
if you came to america and saw all the drug adds in the magazine's/billboards etc youd probably be in shock <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Oh I know what you're talking about, Dulak. I'm an ex-patriot from the United States, living abroad, but I haven't been away so long that I've forgotten about all the hype.
It's still just funny. A bunch of people make money off polluting everyone else. Finally someone gets smart and, in typical Michael Moore-fashion, exposes their dirty secrets. So the snivelling capitalist pigs decide to fight back( those who dare to reveal the truth) by making up a bunch of bogus malarky using ridiculously skewed "facts" and statistics. I'd call it a vain attempt. I might even go so far as to say that the pro-smoking advocates would have had a better argument than this one, that's how absurd I think it is!

can't wait for the day that the whole issue turns around and people actually realise that their health problems stem from this poison in our systems. Ofcourse mainstream medicine will probably claim that its a "new" discovery.

Medicine and Doctors are a mafia. I don't beleive a single word that comes out from there mouths. I just wish and I pray to god that they get health problems just like everyone else has. Then I want them to be ping ponged from doctor to doctor to find a cause for a duration of 4 years just like I have , then come out blank. In the meantime I would love for them to lose everything in life they have accomplished. This is only being fair? Just to let you know, this is not being directed to ALL doctors, only 98% of them.
Ladies and Gentlement, what we are doing is against them. What we are doing is against western medicine, it is against whats taught in schools by white coated idiots. It is against years and years of scientific research. God be with us all.

The first point on the Mercury Myths page incorrectly compares hair levels with blood levels:
"There's even some evidence that human beings are exposed to less mercury today than in the past. Alaska's Public Health Department, for example, reports that when the hair of eight 550-year-old Alaskan mummies was tested for mercury, the results showed levels averaging twice the blood-mercury concentration of today's Alaskans. "
I wonder why they couldn't compare it against the hair of today's Alaskans, wouldn't that be easier than taking blood samples?
Actually I'm kind of glad to see this kind of reaction from the fish corporations because it means that there must be enough of a public concern about the matter. Hopefully the fish corporations also look into muzzling some of the coal and cement firing plants that spew so much mercury into the environment.
