MTHFR and Detox Quick InformationMTHFR…some take home messages. SENSITIVITY TO METHYL DONORS If you have MTHFR C677T you will likely need some L-Methyl Folate [5-MTHF] but if you also have Catechol-O-MethylTransferase [COMT] snps that slowdown the COMT enzyme then you might be sensitive to methyl donors and will have to start low and go slowly when it comes to taking in L-MethylFolate [5-MTHF]. L-METHYLFOLATE [5-MTHF] Taking L-Methyl Folate [5-MTHF] actually helps the MTHFR enzyme work well even if you do not have any snps. FAD/FADH2 …REDOX COFACTOR The critical cofactor for MTHFR is FAD/FADH2 and it is a redox cofactor. For those with the MTHFR C677T snps the FAD/FADH2 cofactor will be thermolabile and that is why the enzyme may not work the way it should. NUTRITION FAD/FADH2 is made from Vitamin B2 [Riboflavin] which is found in many dark GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES. So eating Greens and Beans will be important for getting plenty of natural DiHydroFolate [DHF] and Riboflavin [B2]. SAMe [S-AdenosylMethionine] Supplementing with SAMe could be counterproductive because too much SAMe will cause a negative feedback effect on the MTHFR enzyme and could cause it to work even less well. VITAMIN B-12 [Cobalamin] The next enzyme in the process is Methionine Synthase Reductase [MTRR] and it requires Cobalamin [B12]. If a person is deficient in Vitamin B12 [cobalamin] that could cause what is referred to as “Folate Trapping”. So, before taking L-MethylFolate [5-MTHF] be sure to also take in some Vitamin B12. ZINC and MTR The enzyme that actually is involved directly with transferring the methyl group onto HOMOCYSTEINE to turn it into METHIONINE is called Methionine Synthase [MTR] and it requires ZINC at its active site. Therefore it is important to be sure you have enough ZINC in your diet. You want to be sure you have enough ZINC. ZINC-COPPER BALANCE The ideal ratio of copper to zinc is 1:8 in favor of ZINC. Unfortunately our diets usually favor Copper rather than ZINC. An elevated Histamine level is caused in part by a copper- zinc imbalance…too much COPPER, not enough ZINC.
