---The Rewards of Patience/ Do 'I' Have Enough Time?
--Psalms 40

--The Scriptures contain many stories of people who waited years or even decades before the Lord's promises came to pass. What modern believers can learn from the patience of biblical saints like Abraham, Joseph, David, and Paul is that waiting upon the Lord has eternal rewards.

Today let's look at Israel's most memorable monarch. David was the chosen heir to Israel's throne, but he spent years dodging King Saul's wrathful pursuit. Despite having two different opportunities for vengeance, David resisted the temptation and spared Saul's life. He chose to adhere to God's timetable for his coronation instead of dishonoring the Lord by killing the divinely anointed king. David's psalms reveal his intimate awareness of Yahweh's work in his life. The shepherd king not only achieved his objective through patience; he also observed that God's way was always best.

David left behind an incredible testimony of God's faithfulness for each of us to read and meditate upon. He was committed to waiting upon the Lord, and as a result, he had the Father's approval and blessing. We cannot underestimate the reward of living in divine favor. That isn't a special state reserved for "giants of the faith" like David. All who obediently endure until the Lord acts on their behalf abide in His favor.

David didn't receive his blessings because he was special; he was honored among men because he honored the Lord above all. And since he trusted in God's faithfulness, he endured hardship with patience. We, too, can expect to be blessed when we wait upon the Lord.

In Habakkuk’s day, there was an economic recession. There were no cows in the barn. “Yet...” he writes. Oh, how I love that “yet” in verse 18. “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will joy in the God of my salvation.” Where was his joy? In the Lord, not circumstances.

If you depend on circumstances, you can’t say “rejoice always,” because circumstances change. You lose your job. You lose your health. You lose your friends. You lose your prestige. If that’s where you’re getting your joy, and that changes, you can’t say, “Yet will I rejoice.” But Habakkuk said, “Yet will I joy in the God of my salvation.”

Where are you getting your joy? From the Lord? I hope you are. There’s one way we can find out. If you’re getting your joy from your job, we can find out if we take your job and see if you still have your joy. Maybe you’re getting your joy from your health. You say, “No, it’s from the Lord.” If your health fails, see if you still have your joy.

You see, the only joy anyone can have is in the Lord, because He never changes. Your joy can be threatened if you get it anywhere else. It’s not wrong to joy in your health or your job. But that’s the kind of joy that can be threatened. You need a joy which supersedes that.

----TIME TO WAIT~~

-"After waiting another seven days, Noah released the dove gain. This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak."
--(GENESIS 8:10-11)

-More than a year had passed since the springs of the great deep had burst forth and the floodgates of heaven were unleashed on earth (GENESIS 7:11) in the flood of Noah's day. The world was completely submerged.

The deluge itself lasted only forty days, but drying out was another matter. God had been vocal when commissioning the ark--providing specific instructions. But now He was silent. Noah and his family waited and waited. Had God forgotten them?

No, He had not. He was working on their behalf to restore order. He sent a wind to recede the waters (GENESIS 8:1), and the ark came to rest on a mountain. And then the dove Noah sent out didn't return. Still, Noah waited until God spoke and told him to leave the ark (GENESIS 8:16). His patience and trust were rewarded with a renewed world.

Today's culture of instant gratification puts us in conflict with God's timing. When God seems silent, it's time for us to wait and trust him to sort things out in a way we never could. He's always worth the wait!

--EXPECT DELAYS~~

----Solomon never saw a sign that said, "Expect Delays." But in Proverbs 16, he does contrast our plans with God's providential guidance. The 'Message' paraphrases verse 1 as follows: "Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word." Solomon restates that idea in verse 9, where he adds that even though we "plan [our] course... the LORD establishes [our] steps." In other words, we have ideas about what's supposed to happen, but sometimes God has another path for us.

How do I lose tract of this spiritual truth? I make my plans, sometimes forgetting to ask Him what His plans are. I get frustrated when interruptions interfere.

But in place of that worrying, we could, as Solomon teaches, grow in simply trusting that God guides us, step-by-step, as we prayerfully seek Him, await His leading, and-yes-allow Him to continually redirect us. ~~

--A global computer system outage causes widespread flight cancellations, stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers at airports. During a winter storm, multiple auto accidents close major highways. The person who promised to send a reply "right away" has failed to do so. Delays can often produce anger and frustration, but as followers of Jesus, we have the privilege of looking to Him for help.

One of the Bible's great examples of patience is Joseph, who was sold to slave traders by his jealous brothers, falsely accused by his employer's wife, and imprisoned in Egypt.

The most remarkable fruit of his patience occurred when his brothers came to buy grain during a famine. "I am your brother Joseph," he told them, "the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you...So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God" (45:4-5,8).

--In all our delays, brief or long, may we like Joseph, gain patience, perspective, and peace as we trust in the Lord. ~~

--MYSTERIOUS WAYS ~~ WILL JAX BE HOME IN THE MORNING?

--Wednesday night, 11 P.M. Before I went to bed, I took one last look out my back door toward the woods at the edge of my yard and called, "JAX!, Where are you?"

I have four cats. One was a housecat, but the other three, including JAX, had been born feral. They weren't happy staying inside all of the time, so I would let them wander freely during the day, then call them into the house at night to give them a warm and safe place to rest.

JAX was my biggest wanderer and tended to return later than the others did. A few days earlier, when he'd come home with a scratched face, I started to worry about him. Now there was no sign of him, and this was the latest he'd ever been out. What if he'd gotten into it with a wild animal? What if he didn't come home at all?

"JAX!" I called out into the darkness one more time. I waited. Nothing. I couldn't leave the door open because my other cats might wander back outside. I had to go to sleep. I closed and locked the door.

I got in bed and set my alarm for 2 A.M., so that I could check and see if he'd come back and was waiting to be let in. Then I said a quick prayer: 'God, please protect JAX and bring him home safely.' I drifted off to sleep.

RIIIIINGGG! RIIIIINGG! My cell phone jolted me awake. I flailed my arm around in the dark and picked it up. "Hello?" I said, groggily. No response.
Was it my alarm? I checked the time. No, it was only 1:10 A.M.

I had a feeling that I should go check the back door again, so I did. There was JAX, waiting for me! Had I not woken up when I did, no doubt he would've gotten bored and returned to the woods, where who knows what lurked at night. I let him in. He brushed against my leg before sauntering off to the food bowl.

With JAX back inside and my wits about me, I began to wonder: What exactly had woken me up?

I checked my phone and noticed something odd. My call history showed that my phone had called itself--on its own. That had never happened before. Nor has it ever happened again. Since that night, all four of my cats have come home safely before I've gone to bed. And I have never needed another middle-of-the-night "wake-up call."

--In our "on demand" age, the prospect of waiting for God to answer us may seem almost irrational. Why delay meeting our needs when we have options right in front of us?

Yet the benefits of waiting upon God far outweigh those of forging ahead apart from His involvement. Why? because He knows the future and we don't. Our decisions are usually based on an incomplete assessment of our existing circumstances. We cannot see what is still to come or what is outside our influence. But God can. He knows how our choices today impact tomorrow.

Likewise, the Lord has a plan for your life, and His purposes for you far exceed anything you can come up with yourself. For example, rushing headlong into marriage or a business venture may fit your plan, but not His--and it may also be disastrous.

But when you wait for Him, you're demonstrating that you want to do His will above your own. Yes, waiting on God is tough, but that is precisely how your faith is strengthened and your inner character is molded into Christ's image. So regardless of how pressing your need may be today, remember that waiting on God is always well worth it. ~~

--The Song of Songs captures this active commitment with two lovers delighting in and yearning for each other (1:15-16; 3:1-3). They love and are loved in return (2:16; 7:10) and are satisfied and content in each other's company (2:16:4:9-11; 7:10). Surely this can be one of life's greatest joys.

The earthly love between husband and wife is an echo of the passionate love and fervent pursuit of Jesus for those who believe in Him. "This is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16 NLT).

While it's beautiful to see the love a man and woman can share for decades, it pales compared to the amazing love God extends to us for eternity. That's the greatest love story! Jesus is the way the truth and the life. Come to the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ. (John 14 verse 6)

----I'm sipping my first cup of coffee on the last day of the year. It's still dark, and I nudge the curtain to catch the first of light. It's still dark, and I nudge the curtain to catch the first glimpse of light. It's an odd personal tradition, a secret I've kept until now--to watch the sunrise on both the last day and first day of the year.

My ritual started eighteen years ago. I was pregnant with my oldest and had been up early that New Year's Eve morning quite by accident. I was struck by the beauty of the sunrise when it occurred to me that this might be a wonderful way to commemorate this special time. I knew I'd be too tired to stay up to midnight, so I thought. I may not see the ball drop. but I'll watch it rise!

The Japanese have a word that means welcoming the first sunrise of the New Year, hatsuhinode. I zipper my winter coat over my bathrobe, find my favorite hat and knitted mittens, and go to our side porch, which faces east.

The first hint of light gives shape to the darkness. From the sheer silence, it seems I am the only one awake. Perfect. Just God and me, and I' m taken by the mystery of it all--the passage of time and the challenges and blessings that will unfold in the days to come. My thoughts shift to loved ones. I pray for good fortune and health and then I let go of thinking. I lose myself in the holiness of the moment, the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the grace of God shining right now. ~~

---Theresa left Sue a message, saying she had great news. Sue was sure the news was that her friend had received Jesus as Savior. After all, she had been praying for Theresa's salvation for thirty years.

A few days later, Theresa revealed very different "great news" ; She had a new boyfriend and was moving in with him Sue cried out in desperation, "Lord, what makes me think you would answer me after thirty ears of praying!"

Some of our hardest struggles are those deep desires that go unmet. The psalmist David could relate. He cried, "Have merry on me, Lord...My soul is in deep anguish. How long, LORD, how long? (Psalm 6:2-3) Later in the psalm, we read that David knew the Lord had heard him v.(9).

A month after Theresa's "great news," she called and left another message: "I have wonderful new! I trusted Jesus as my Savior! I don't know why I didn't do it long ago." Thirty years of prayer paid off.

Keep praying. In His time, God will answer. ~

---Recently I returned home after being away for two weeks. The fridge was empty of the basics: milk, fruit, and fresh veggies I headed to the grocery store. On the way I decided to stop at the gym for a workout. Unfortunately while on the treadmill, I suffered a sciatic injury. I could barely hobble, but--like a glutton for punishment--I refused to go home without buying food first.

My favorite grocery store has carts that require a quarter to unlock them for us. I always carry quarters, but this time I couldn't find one. How would I ever manage the groceries? I limped toward the entrance praying, Jesus help me.
I stepped into the store. Lo and behold, an empty unlocked cart sat three feet away. I waited and watched for a couple of minutes, but one claimed it. I t seemed invisible to shoppers and staff alike.

"Thank You, thank You, Jesus," I whispered. I pushed the cart around the store feeling very loved indeed.

Jesus cares about the birds, and He cares about His children far more. He's present, aware of, and eager to help us with every detail of our lives. No concern is too small for Him. Not even that of a shopping cart. Reach out to Jesus. He's as close as the mention of His Name. He always has time for us. "I will never leave you nor forsake you." ~~

The women of Brown Manor had raised their families and retired from their careers. Now they could no longer live no their own, so they came to Brown Manor as a sort of "last stop before heaven." They enjoyed each other's company but struggled with feelings of uselessness.

One of the women, who had spent years playing the piano, often played hymns on the manor's piano. Other women joined her, and together they lifted their voices to praise to God.

One day a government auditor was conducting an inspection during one of their spontaneous worship services. When he heard them sing "What Will You Do with Jesus?" he recalled the song from his childhood. That day, God spoke to him again, and this time he trusted Jesus.

--Like the women of Brown Manor, Sarah thought she was too old to be used by God (Genesis 18:11). But God gave her a child in her old age. who was the ancestor of Jesus (22:1-3; Matthew 1:2, 17).
--Like Sarah and the women of Brown Manor, we're never too old for God to use us. --
