Might not be all that hard. Permafrost doesn't insulate as well as a thick coat of snow & ice. Doesn't create friction either.

If your dear relative knows anything much about science, she should know that risk is involved. Lots of folks have had their "life's work rubbished". Collecting data's fairly immune, but speculations and even legit hypotheses & theories?
