HART On CD
How To Create A Firewall Exception

This page explains how to create a firewall exception for HART On CD. A firewall exception allows HART On CD to communicate on the Internet so it can send email or restore documents.

How To Create A Firewall Exception

Why do we need to set up an exception?

HART On CD needs to be able to communicate on the internet in order to send email or to restore damaged or missing documents.

Unfortunately, firewall software that is installed on your computer can block HART On CD from being able to communicate on the internet.

Windows also has its own built-in firewall software that can block HART On CD as well.

In order to allow HART On CD to communicate on the internet, you need to set up a firewall "exception", sometimes called a "program exception".

A firewall exception is an instruction to a firewall that tells the firewall to allow a certain program - like the HART On CD program - to communicate on the internet.

You may have 2 or more firewalls on your computer.

Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 all have built-in firewalls. Many computers come with antivirus software that also contains a firewall.

For this reason, it may be necessary for you to create a firewall exception for both firewalls in order for HART On CD to be able to communicate on the internet.

Do we really need to set up an exception?

Before you go through the trouble of setting up a firewall exception, you need to find out if HART On CD is able to communicate on the internet. If it can, then there is no need to set up a firewall exception.

The easiest way to find out if HART On CD can communicate on the internet is to attempt to restore a document.

To do this, click "Help", then "Restore Documents", then "Manual Restore".

After a short delay, a list of HART On CD documents will appear.

If this list appears, then HART On CD is able to communicate on the internet and there is no need to set up a firewall exception. Just click "Cancel", then "Close", then "OK" to cancel out of the Restore Documents window.

If this list does not appear after 60 seconds, or if you receive an error message from HART On CD (and the program may shut down), then it will be necessary to set up a firewall exception.

Creating an exception in your Windows firewall.

First, create a firewall exception in Window's built-in firewall.

There are instructions on the Internet that show you how to do this, so we will provide a link for you depending on which version of Windows you are using.

During this process, if you discover that your Windows firewall is turned off, then it will not be necessary to create a firewall exception in the Windows firewall. In this case, just skip to the next section: "Creating an exception in your firewall software".

If you're using Windows XP, Click Here.
(Scroll down to the section entitled "Adding a program exception".)

If you're using Windows Vista, Click Here.

If you're using Windows 7, Click Here.

Creating an exception in your firewall software.

Now, you must determine if you have firewall software installed on your computer.

The best way to do this is to search through your installed programs in the Windows Start menu and look for any of the following programs:

  • Agnitum Outpost Firewall
  • Checkpoint ZoneAlarm
  • Comodo Firewall
  • Computer Associates (CA)
  • Lavasoft Personal Firewall
  • Norton (Personal Firewall, or Internet Security)
  • Outpost Firewall
  • PC Tools Firewall
  • Prevention Personal Firewall
  • Private Firewall
  • Sphinx Firewall Control
  • Symantec (Internet Security, or 360, or Personal Firewall)
  • Tall Emu Online Armor

If you see any of these firewall programs on your computer (or any other program that you recognize as a firewall program), then you will need to create a firewall exception for the HART On CD program.

The easiest way to learn how to create an exception for your particular brand of firewall is to open the firewall software, then open its Help system, and then search the Help system for the word "exception".

The firewall software should provide you with simple instructions for creating an exception for any software program.

If you are unable to create an exception in your firewall software, you should check the manufacturer's website for help, or contact the manufacturer for technical support.

Setting up an exception is one of the most common things that people do with a firewall, so online help should be easy to find.
